Once we received the GoodMeasure report, it helped us establish systems to effectively track our day-to-day interactions with regular programs. We were even able to track website visits and understand who was reaching out for help.

GoodMeasure: Helping Guardians of our Children level up their systems

With the help of ImpactLab’s GoodMeasure tool, charitable trust Guardians of our Children were able to realise the importance of effective data collection and management, encouraging them to implement changes that improved their systems – and ultimately their ability to win an additional $144,000 in funding. 

Based in Auckland, Guardians of our Children offers free community support for families going through the Family Court, helping parents through the often-distressing process, and educating them about the many benefits of successful long-term co-parenting.  

The GoodMeasure calculated Guardians of our Children’s social return on investment to be 520 percent - meaning that for every $1 that is invested in the organisation, $5.20 of measurable good is returned to New Zealand. This comes in the form of reduced family violence, addiction, debt and improved mental health, for example. 

The organisation partnered with ImpactLab in January 2023 to produce a GoodMeasure report, and it was through the process of supplying information for the report that Guardians of our Children founder, Frank Hicks, discovered how they could level up their current data systems and improve their service model. 

“One of the biggest changes after going through the GoodMeasure process is how we’ve changed our approach to collecting data,” Hicks says. 

“We have implemented a whole new level of professionalism to our systems now.” 

Since the report, Guardians of our Children have employed strategies to streamline their data collection and management processes, the most significant being bringing Tina Moulynox – an IT specialist – on board as a systems consultant.  

Since the GoodMeasure report, Guardians of our Children have expanded their programmes from four to nine, with increased buy-in from their stakeholders and partner agencies about the effectiveness of Guardians of our Children’s approach to reducing family harm.  

As a charitable trust, Guardians of our Children’s ability to hire additional employees is only made possible by external support. The GoodMeasure report now provides the organisation with data-based insights they can present to potential funders. Guardians of our Children promote their GoodMeasure report on their website and include in various funding applications and presentations to stakeholders.

“Applying for funding has become a lot easier. Having the GoodMeasure data has helped show the benefits of our work in a clearly understood way,” says Moulynox. 

What was our aim of completing a GoodMeasure report?

We knew our work made a real difference but lacked formal proof. We needed solid, independent evidence to show funders and policymakers that our kaupapa creates real outcomes - helping the people often invisible in these spaces. With growing demand for our ‘Make Them Proud’ workshops and one-on-one support, we wanted to understand where we have the most impact and build a sustainable future.

What did we learn from our GoodMeasure report?

GoodMeasure offered us the chance to step back, look at the bigger picture, and grow with purpose. The report gave us much to celebrate. It confirmed that our safe, non-judgmental space reduces stress, improves communication between parents, and leads to better outcomes for our children. It also revealed gaps. While focused on immediate needs, we hadn’t built strong systems to track long-term outcomes. Balancing hands-on work with solid measurement is key to continuous improvement.

How did the report impact our organisation?

With clear, evidence-backed stories, doors opened. Agencies such as NZ Police, Oranga Tamariki, and Family Court professionals began referring people to us. That recognition transformed everything. The report clarified our unique role - not a crisis or legal service, but a long-term partner supporting caregivers to rebuild lives and relationships with kids at the centre. This clarity shaped funding, refined programmes, and guided our board’s focus.

How did we use the GoodMeasure insights to make tangible changes?

We introduced a structured intake process to better understand family needs from the start. Our website now clearly reflects who we are and what we offer. We also built better systems to track outcomes and gather feedback, improving, while keeping the personal, wraparound support our community trusts. Data showed our biggest impact was generated through ‘Make Them Proud’, and helped us focus resources and scale without burnout. The GoodMeasure process gave us tools to strengthen our foundation and keep showing up for those who need us most.
