General

ImpactLab was established in 2018 with a shared commitment to improving how investment is made to support people in our community to achieve their aspirations, especially those with the most complex lives. We believe that to make better decisions for our communities it's crucial to consider both the human stories and the hard facts that substantiate them.

Maria Owen, CEO, and Hayden Judd, COO, lead an interdisciplinary team with backgrounds in frontline service delivery, technology, investment management, business analytics, academia, procurement and public policy.

Our board, chaired by co-founder and former New Zealand Prime Minister Sir Bill English ensures we keep focussed on what matters most: supporting our customers to do good, better.

We have offices across Aotearoa New Zealand (Wellington and Auckland), in modern spaces designed to spark creativity and collaboration. Coming soon to Australia.

Yes! We are expanding into Australia and work with organisations across different regions to measure and improve their social impact.

Yes, we proudly offer not-for-profit pricing for charities and community organisations. For standard GoodMeasures, we offer a flat fee. However, fees may vary depending on the nature and complexity of your programme, so we recommend getting in touch with us directly. We'll assess your needs and provide a tailored quote.

For larger or more complex projects, we may recommend a short scoping phase to ensure we price the work accurately.

Both. We use the Treasury’s CBAx value under its Creative Commons licence, and we access data from other publicly available sources.

GoodMeasure

GoodMeasure uses a robust, evidence-basedapproach to quantify social impact, applying our Social Return on Investment(SROI) methodology and sector-informed data to assign a dollar value tooutcomes.

GoodMeasure is for charities, funders, and organisations wanting clear, credible insights to improve their decision-making, aid funding applications, and demonstrate the long-term value of their work.

Unlike one-size-fits-all tools, GoodMeasure combines a rigorous methodology with real-world applicability, ensuring that insights are both credible and practical for driving meaningful change.

Most GoodMeasures take 6 weeks, depending on data availability and project complexity. We are consistently reviewing our delivery process to ensure the most efficient and easy to manage experience for our customers.

By providing clear, data-driven evidence of impact, GoodMeasure can help strengthen your funding proposals, helping you build confidence in the outcomes of your programme and giving you comparable insights to build into your applications.

We believe in helping organisations to do good, better. Sometimes this means taking a good hard look at what you do. Sometimes this is easier when you have an independently verified understanding of your impact, and the evidence about what you do. If you are disappointed in your results, ImpactLab can provide you with support to take a more impactful approach to working with your community, and we can recalculate your social impact in 12 months to measure any improvements.

GoodMeasure Homes

Our cost methodology categorises costs into three main areas:

  • Capital costs (e.g., construction, land purchase)
  • Financing costs (e.g., interest payments, loan repayments)
  • Operating costs (e.g., maintenance, utilities, property management)

For the social value analysis, we consider annual operating and financing costs - expenses required to keep the development running. We also categorise income sources into:

  • Public income (e.g., government subsidies)
  • Subsidised private income (e.g., discounted tenant rent)
  • Non-subsidised private income (e.g., market-rate rent)

This approach ensures a clearer understanding of the financial sustainability of housing projects.

Housing projects involve both costs and income flows. While we assess the gross cost, we also provide income-adjusted SROI estimates, factoring in income sources like government subsidies, tenant rent, and/or other housing-related revenue. This ensures a more accurate reflection of financial realities across different housing types. Our housing-specific impact metrics also incorporate key social and economic outcomes linked to stable housing, offering deeper insights beyond traditional financial measures.

GM Homes has a slightly higher price to reflect the extensive research required to build a housing-specific methodology as housing is an 'enabler' of broader social outcomes, making it more complex to assess than other sectors. We consider housing alongside additional services and consider how different housing types and tenures can benefit different residents. Valuing the social impact of housing requires multiple steps of logic and synthesis, which we address through our housing impact framework and theory of change. Our methodology goes into greater depth to ensure a robust and accurate analysis of housing-related social value. Additionally, GM Homes applies a bespoke cost methodology to account for the unique costs and income flows in housing projects.

GoodMeasure Homes evaluates the social and economic benefits of stable housing, using SROI analysis to quantify the impact on a varitiy of outcomes including health, employment, education, and wellbeing.

It’s designed for a variety of housing types, including social housing, emergency accommodation, affordable rentals, and other housing-related initiatives and programmes seeking to demonstrate their long-term impact.

It is widely understood that stable housing drives wider social benefits, but its impact is often undervalued or hard to measure. GoodMeasure Homes provides credible, transparent data, measure and insights to highlight the value of housing initiativies.

Providers use GoodMeasure Homes insights to improve their housing services, operational efficiencies and support further investment conversations by demonstrating the long-term impact of their housing interventions.

GM Homes follows the same process and shares the same core aims as GoodMeasure, but its methodology has been specifically developed for the housing sector. It is based on an extensive review of New Zealand and internationally comparable housing research, ensuring we use the latest insights. Additionally, GM Homes applies a bespoke cost methodology and additional SROI metrics to reflect the unique costs and income flows in housing projects.

Impact Innovation

While GoodMeasure is our flagship SROI product, Impact Innovation offers a more tailored approach for impact measurement and insight generation.

It’s designed for organisations with unique impact measurement needs, such as large-scale programmes, cross-provider collaborations, or initiatives or organisational models that don’t fit our standard measurement processes.

We work through a facilitated process, including a combination of workshops, project design, and tailored measurement strategies that align with your organisation’s goals.

By working through a more bespoke impact measurement approach, Impact Innovation ensures you can measure, improve, and communicate your impact effectively while factoring in the complexity of your organisations needs.
